psychic pokemon, pt 1 (gen 1)

today i'm gonna put the spotlight on some psychic pokemon. we'll start with gen 1 (we'll cover some less scary ones too)

here's drowzee's pokedex entry from red/blue:

• Puts enemies to sleep, then eats their dreams. Occasionally gets sick from eating bad dreams. 

here's the one from silver:

•  It remembers every dream it eats. It rarely eats the dreams of adults because children's are much tastier. 

surprisingly, this is actually really tame, since dream eater is a legitimate move form the game (see the second link in the red/blue entry). it  wouldn't even be s bad if later entries weren't so insistent on mentioning how much it love 'fun dreams'. of course this is just the tip of the iceberg.

next we have drowzee's evolved form, hypno. the entry from red/blue:

• Avoid eye contact if you come across one. It will try to put you to sleep by using its pendulum

that's not so bad, though a bit troubling that it apparently will use it on humans as well as other pokemon. the entry from silver:

• When it is very hungry, it puts humans it meets to sleep, then it feasts on their dreams.  

this entry makes sense since drowzee does the same. now here's where it gets strange:

• It carries a pendulum-like device. There once was an incident in which it took away a child it hypnotized.

this is the entry from FireRed (the gen 3 remakes of gen 1). it one thing for a pokemon to eat dreams, because that's just a move that psychic pokemon can do. it's another thing to hear about a pokemon that carried a child from it's home.

next we have abra, which can attack in it's sleep (though you probably just know it as that pokemon that would always teleport out of battle). it's first evolved form, kadabra, can make weird things happen just by being around. the pokedex entry from yellow mentions it making clocks go backward and the diamond says that it will make eerie shadows appear on tv screens. there's also the entry from FireRed that says that the first kadabra was once a human boy with psychic powers. and then there's alakazam, which remembers everything. everything.

if you saw the early pokemon movies, you know about mewtwo and what he's capable of.

and this is the just gen 1 pure psychics. in my next post i'm gonna move to gen 2 and 3.
