psychic pokemon, pt 3 (gen 4,5)

moving on to the last to gens today!

gen four comes out of the gate strong with 5 legendary psychic pokemon (the lake guardian trio, cresselia, and victini). all four have some great mythology behind them.

bronzor is an interesting pokemon because of it's connection to the ancient world. from the diamond entry:

Implements shaped like it were discovered in ancient tombs. It is unknown if they are related
 this is also pretty interesting:
X-ray photos were taken to check its body structure. Nothing appeared, however.
and that makes me wonder what bronzor is. it's evolved form, bronzong, is equally mysterious.

other psychic pokemon from this gen are chingling, mime jr., and gallade.

gen 5 starts off with a deceptive little pokemon called munna. its super cute, but don't let that fool you. munna is the unova's own version of drowzee. its even called a dream eater pokemon. that being said, munna is a bit more pleasant that drowzee, asthetically at least. from the white pokedex:
It eats the dreams of people and Pokémon. When it eats a pleasant dream, it expels pink-colored mist.
that's just cute. it's evolved form, musharna, is just as good.

next are elgyem and beheeyem, two alien pokemon. elgyem's pokedex entries:
black: It uses its strong psychic power to squeeze its opponent's brain, causing unendurable headaches.
white: This Pokémon had never been seen until it appeared from far in the desert 50 years ago.
the shout out in to the roswell incident is nice. beheeyem's pokedex entries:
black: It can manipulate an opponent's memory. Apparently, it communicates by flashing its three different-colored fingers.
white: It uses psychic power to control an opponent's brain and tamper with its memories.
the black entry is another shout out, this time to the original war of the worlds film. extraterrestrial pokemon are always interesting.

the last pokemon is sigilyph, another ancient pokemon. from it's black entry:
They never vary the route they fly, because their memories of guarding an ancient city remain steadfast.
the ancient city may or may not be the desert resort, since that is the only place they are found. then again , the desert resort might be the remains of a more current city.
other gen 5 psychic pokemon include the gothita evolution line, the solosis evolution line, and darmantian and meoletta depending on the form.

and that's all for the psychic mons! next we'll talk breifly about dragon types, and then it's on to the dark type.

psychic pokemon, pt. 2 (gen 2 and 3)

surprisingly, there are only three pure psychic pokemon in gen 2, espeon, unown, and wobbuffett. while unown are okay, espeon and wobbuffett are both good pokemon (espeon is one of my favorites). for half psychic types, we have natu and xatu. i've always found these two kind of interesting. they're very mysterious. from natu's gold pokedex entry:
Because its wings aren't yet fully grown, it has to hop to get around. It is always staring at something.
and xatu's gen 2 entries:
gold: They say that it stays still and quiet because it is seeing both the past and future at the same time.
silver: In South America, it is said that its right eye sees the future and its left eye views the past.
crystal: Once it begins to meditate at sunrise, the entire day will pass before it will move again.
i've linked to xatu's bulbapedia page above, and i urge you to look at the pokedex entries for the later generation too.

two other half psychic pokemon from gen 2 are lugia and celebi. both are legendaries and both are really important pokemon. lugia is the main legendary for all of the gen 2 games.
other half psychic types from gen 2 include slowking, girafargig, and smoochum.

now to gen 3. there are a LOT  of psychic types from this generation. you can find complete lists here, on the bulbapedia page for the psychic type (pokemon numbered between 252-386) i'm gonna pick out a few that i find interesting.

first up we have gardevoir. from the sapphire pokedex:
Gardevoir has the psychokinetic power to distort the dimensions and create a small black hole. This Pokémon will try to protect its Trainer even at the risk of its own life.
which is pretty awesome. i only know this pokemon from the the second pokemon rangers game, so this is new to me. i urge you to go to the page and read all of it's pokedex entries, they'e very interesting.

next we have lunatone and solrock. these two remind me of clefairy in how people think they both come from space. lunatone was found near a meteorite, while solrock supposedly comes from the sun. for lunatone's sapphire entry:
Lunatone becomes active around the time of the full moon. Instead of walking, it moves by floating in midair using telekinesis. The Pokémon's intimidating red eyes cause all those who see it to become transfixed with fear.
and solrock's ruby entry:
Solrock is a new species of Pokémon that is said to have fallen from space. It floats in the air and moves silently. In battle, this Pokémon releases intensely bright light.
claydol is another pokemon that i find interesting, because it's one of the ones that supposedly comes from an inanimate object brought to life. here's it's sapphire entry:
Claydol is an enigma that appeared from a clay statue made by an ancient civilization dating back 20,000 years. This Pokémon shoots beams from both its hands.
to add to that, in Pokemon Rangers: Shadows of Almia, you can only find Claydol in the Hippodown Temple, an ancient temple in the desert. also, four of the ten legendaries in this generation are psychic or half psychic (deoxys, jirachi, latias, and latios). jirachi can grant wishes, and deoxys is a virus that got mutated into a pokemon. check out the pages for all four.

the next (and last) part for psychic pokemon will cover gen 4 and 5!

psychic pokemon, pt 1 (gen 1)

today i'm gonna put the spotlight on some psychic pokemon. we'll start with gen 1 (we'll cover some less scary ones too)

here's drowzee's pokedex entry from red/blue:
here's the one from silver:
  •  It remembers every dream it eats. It rarely eats the dreams of adults because children's are much tastier.
surprisingly, this is actually really tame, since dream eater is a legitimate move form the game (see the second link in the red/blue entry). it  wouldn't even be s bad if later entries weren't so insistent on mentioning how much it love 'fun dreams'. of course this is just the tip of the iceberg.

next we have drowzee's evolved form, hypno. the entry from red/blue:
  • Avoid eye contact if you come across one. It will try to put you to sleep by using its pendulum
that's not so bad, though a bit troubling that it apparently will use it on humans as well as other pokemon. the entry from silver:
this entry makes sense since drowzee does the same. now here's where it gets strange:
  • It carries a pendulum-like device. There once was an incident in which it took away a child it hypnotized.
this is the entry from FireRed (the gen 3 remakes of gen 1). it one thing for a pokemon to eat dreams, because that's just a move that psychic pokemon can do. it's another thing to hear about a pokemon that carried a child from it's home.

next we have abra, which can attack in it's sleep (though you probably just know it as that pokemon that would always teleport out of battle). it's first evolved form, kadabra, can make weird things happen just by being around. the pokedex entry from yellow mentions it making clocks go backward and the diamond says that it will make eerie shadows appear on tv screens. there's also the entry from FireRed that says that the first kadabra was once a human boy with psychic powers. and then there's alakazam, which remembers everything. everything.

if you saw the early pokemon movies, you know about mewtwo and what he's capable of.

and this is the just gen 1 pure psychics. in my next post i'm gonna move to gen 2 and 3.

so i got a reply on one of my previous posts
k downing said:
I agree ghost pokemon like dusknoir and gengar are too evil for younger fans
i completely agree with dusknoir, as that's a pokemon form one of the later generations. i think, compared to some of the later generation pokemon, that gengar is a bit tame. i think that maybe some of the creepier pokemon might be, like a little bonus for the older players? i know that i didn't start reading the pokedex entries until i was much older.

so question time: do you guys think the pokemon creators realised how creepy the ghost pokemon might be to younger kids? because some of them are downright creepy.

this is in reference to the link i posted yesterday

don't end up like me (part 2)

today on the menu: gym leaders, HM's and alternate teams/back up pokemon

susing back up pokemon seems a little bit insensitive (to the pokemon), but it's a good way to be ready for anything the league throws at you, while also getting to expand your pokedex. yesterday, i told you all about my  team in diamond, and how it's not all that good for beating all the gym leaders. when your main team has an abundance of one pokemon type (like how mine is half water pokemon) it's good to have back-ups. for example, i have a ponyta that i used as a back up for my empoleon at the snowpoint city gym. my graveler was a back up for empoleon and dialga in the sunnyshore city gym before i made it a permanent member of my team.

if using a pokemon for just one gym isn't really your style, you can go for entire alternate teams. it's a good way to spend time with all of your pokemon. and remember, try to keep your team diverse!

a tip about HM's: spread them around your team. a limit of 2 different HM's per pokemon in your team. also, teach the same HM to at least one pokemon you don't keep in your team, so that if you have to switch you won't be without HM's you need to get around.

that's all for today. tomorrow's topic is a surprise! (because i don't know what it is yet lol)

don't end up like me (part 1)

so today i'm gonna tell you about the importance of being prepared in the pokemon games.

last weekend, i made the decision to beat the elite four in my pokemon diamond game. it's a big step, but i've got to do it someday. i went to play my game with the intent of beginning to train my pokemon when i suddenly started to worry about whether or not i had the right pokemon to take them on.

this is where being prepared comes in.

you can't just go against the elite four all willy nilly. you have to have the right tools. that means all the regular stuff, like potions and status heals, as well as battle items to raise your stats. but one of the most important things is having the right pokemon team. i cannot stress enough how important it is to have a well rounded pokemon team. having too many of the same types of pokemon will be very hard on you later in the game. for example, here's my pokemon team in diamond:

  • Empoleon (water/steel)
  • Dialga (dragon/steel)
  • Pelipper (water/flying)
  • Wooper (water/ground)
  • Pachirisu (electric)
  • Graveler (rock/ground)
the problem is evident right away: half my team is water pokemon. for regular gameplay this is fine, to an extent.  it works for getting around the world, but isn't too good for taking on gym leaders. for the elite four, my team is not as good as it could be. an example of a better one is my team from black

  • Servine (grass)
  • Herdier (normal)
  • Purrloin (dark)
  • Panpour (water)
this team is much more well rounded, with diverse pokemon types. i think a good team can be made up like this:

  • one grass/fire/water type (your starter)
  • one pokemon the opposite of your starter (if you have a water pokemon, one grass-type)
  • one electric type
  • a rock or ground (or both/half)
  • a dark/psychic/ghost
  • a flying or combination flying
combination pokemon can make this easier and harder, becasue you run the risk of overloading your team on one type, even if it seems well rounded (which was my problem). of course, that list i made probably isn't the best (it doesn't include fighting, dragon, or steel, which are all good to have). in the end it's best to look and see what you're up against and plan accordingly

tomorrow i'm gonna continue on with this, talking about the gym leaders, HM's, and back-ups

and i also have some links, so you don't give yourself a headache training for the elite four (like i did)

i'm sorry i don't have much today, but here's the link to pokemon's guide dang it! page. very informative.
